A cobalt-and-white plate with a pierced border — diamonds and triangles cut clean through the rim so the light comes through it. The well holds two birds over a spray of blossoms and rockwork, and four reserve panels around the edge each carry their own little scene. Scalloped edge, hand-painted throughout, marked on the reverse.
Reticulated pieces like this were made to be looked at as much as used. It's beautiful on a plate rail, better on a wall, and quietly spectacular under a candle at a blue-and-white table.
