A covered casserole in that deep, glossy Marcrest brown, banded with the daisy-and-dot relief the pattern is named for. The lid domes up to a turned knob, the foot ring shows bare cream clay, and the whole thing has real weight in the hand.
Marked "Oven Proof Stoneware USA" on the base — Marcrest was made by Western Stoneware in Illinois and turned up in a lot of Midwestern kitchens from the fifties on.
Still oven-safe, still handsome enough to go straight from the rack to the middle of the table.
