A speckled stoneware plate with a hand-painted sunburst around the rim — alternating strokes of deep blue and warm brown, each one laid down with a brush, none of them quite matching the next. The body is an oatmeal cream flecked with iron, ringed by a thin dark line at the edge and again around the well.
Marked on the base: "Potter's Wheel — Freezer to Oven Stoneware, Made in Japan, Hand Decorated, 4115." Seventies Japanese stoneware built for everyday use, which is exactly why so much of it survived in this kind of shape.
Good under a stack of morning toast, better as the thing you set a wheel of cheese on.
