A proper doorstop of a book — navy cloth boards with a gold Islamic medallion stamped on the front and WORLD CERAMICS running down the spine in gilt. Inside, hundreds of plates tracing pottery from the ancient Near East through Persian lustreware, European salt-glaze and stoneware, Chinese porcelain, and on.
Edited by Robert J. Charleston and published by Paul Hamlyn in London, 1968. It was the reference for a generation of collectors, and it still earns its shelf space — we've pulled it down more than once to put a name to something.
Heavy, handsome, and genuinely useful. Coffee table or working shelf, either way.
